Death Valley
Jim and I took a short trip to Eureka, CA, and were blessed with lots of beautiful birds
I didn't expect a good sunset after rain for forever so I shot this off our deck
Taken at Siltcoos Outlet a couple of nights before it was closed to the public until next September to protect snowy plovers nests
I heard there were harlequin ducks in Newport, so I packed my camera and went
It was a thrill to watch this. I think the male first did a ritual display dance, followed by the female, followed by him
And what a beautiful dawn it was. We took a walk on the river walk both mornings that we were in Eureka. Sadly the second morning the light wasn't so good
Taking off in the morning golden hour in Eureka from the river walk
The light on the birds from the river walk in Eureka was stunning the first day. I think this was a marbled godwit
Shot from the far side of the river in the early morning light
AT least, that's what I think they are
Taken at Siltcoos Outlet before it was closed for the season
When I went up to Newport to photograph the harlequin ducks, I found there were probably 5000 surf scoters...probably gathering before flying north
Taken at Siltcoos Outlet before it was closed for the season
We went on a wonderful hike in the redwoods North of Eureka
I heard there were harlequin ducks in Newport, so I packed my camera and went
First eagle sighting of the year on Washburne beach
A bit of peacefulness
I heard there were harlequin ducks in Newport, so I packed my camera and went
Just a tiny fraction of the probably 5000 surf scoters in Newport
Went down to Tahkenich campground hoping to see some nest building. There was just one rufous and one annas female hard at work
I heard there were harlequin ducks in Newport, so I packed my camera and went
This was a mistake. I shot the photo before I focused. But I like how it turned out
I heard there were harlequin ducks in Newport, so I packed my camera and went
Taken from way across the river
I've been taking an on line photo course on use of color and am using what I'm learning to practice on some old photos

From the river walk in Eureka. I liked the environmental capture and the light
From the Northern end of the river walk in Eureka that evening
Pearl was impressed
